The census counts 46,490 same-sex-partner households

Did the 2000 census ask for sexual preference? How do they know the difference between a homosexual household and heterosexual college roommates or flight attendants sharing an apartment?

Maybe any household where one of the 2 adults was named "Pat" was given a same-sex label? Good question - would be interesting to find out how they came up with that number. Kinda like the "1 in 10" figure thrown around the past 4 decades.
