Man Charged in Attack on Magic Mascot

ORLANDO, Fla. - A man who attacked the Orlando Magic (news)'s mascot was charged Saturday with battery, disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer without violence.

William Jeffrey Hawkins, 39, put Stuff the Magic Dragon in a chokehold in the waning moments of the Magic's 102-98 win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. Police were alerted, and it took three stun gun shots to get the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Hawkins under control to the point where he could be removed from his seat and dragged to the concourse, Orlando police Lt. John O'Grady said.

Orange County Jail records show Hawkins was booked early Saturday. His bail was set at $500, and he remained jailed.

"Stuff was nearly snuffed," O'Grady said.

O'Grady said Hawkins told authorities he could not remember what happened.

"He appeared to be pretty much intoxicated. He told us he had quite a few beers," O'Grady said.

Hawkins' home phone number is not listed, and a woman who answered at his business said she didn't know about what happened and could not comment.

"It's in the hands of the proper authorities," Magic spokesman Joel Glass said Saturday.

In Friday night's game, Juwan Howard had 24 points and Drew Gooden added 16 points and 12 rebounds to help the Magic overcome Tracy McGrady's ejection.

McGrady was ejected for twice kicking the basketball into the stands at the end of the first half. He was upset there was no foul call on his buzzer-beating layup.

On a night when he reached 10,000 career points, McGrady finished with 15 points — his fewest since going scoreless on Dec. 19, when he hurt his back in the first quarter.

Carmelo Anthony had 35 points for Denver, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. Nene had 15, while Marcus Camby added 12 points and 20 rebounds.

My favorite line was:

"Stuff was nearly snuffed," O'Grady said.

Can anyone explain "Resisting An Officer Without Violence?"

Is that like a dirty look? Not spreading your legs wide enough for him to kick your balls?

I mean I resist an officer every time I stay at home to have a beer! I resist an officer when I wear my seatbelt!

What a catch 22 statuate?

Is it just me or is it strange that the article makes no mention whatsoever of the identity of the poor soul inside the dragon suit?

Probably the old hippie trick of going limp so that 3 or 4 of them have to pick you up and carry you to the paddy waggon.

If going limp is a criminal act, I'm glad they make a drug for that now.......

Seriously though, there are a whole bunch of double negative laws on the books, there specifically to charge anyone with anything at anytime.

It's like the DUI/DWI charge. If a cop says you were driving drunk, and you blew under the legal limit(even a zero), they have the second DUI charge which is an observation or opinion of the officer and cannot be refuted.

On my way to take my daughter to school in the mornings, there is a county road with a stop-n-go light with turnoffs for the right turns. There is a stop sign at each of the crossings which contradicts the green light. You get things thrown at you and screamed at for stopping on a green in a 55MPH intersection, but on nice sunny mornings when the mood is right, the county cop just nails anyone on the green because they failed to stop. It's ridiculous.

No windshield washer fluid, failed pump, streaky wipers, cracked tail lense, blown license plate lamp, fog lights higher than 14" from the pavement without covers on them, windows tinted too dark(factory tinting), inattentive driving, rust thru on the outer body, and more endless Alice's Restaraunt kind of crap that you just can't escape.

It's just plain unamerican to be legally required to assist in your own arrest. The fines should buy you some service. Even if it's carrying you to the cruiser.

What's next? Appearing too cheery in your mug shot?

Personally, I have taken a course on getting arrested. How to behave, what to do, how the system works, the psychology involved, and so on. I've never had to use it, but it's very helpful just to know. I would make the policeman's job as easy as possible. For it is not he who has the power. He only has the authority for a very brief period of time. Let him enjoy it.

Really good advice that could prevent personal injury.
