U.S. Convoy Attacked Close to Baghdad [no US fatalities]
Texas Star-Telegram ^ | Feb. 21, 2004 | Associated Press

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents opened fire on a U.S. military convoy south of Baghdad on Saturday, apparently causing some U.S. casualties, witnesses said.

Coalition officials in the capital were unaware of the reoprted attack, which occurred in the al-Haswa area, 25 miles south of Baghdad.

Iraqis opposed to the U.S. occupation make daily attacks against coalition troops in Iraq. Since the war began March 20, 546 American service members have died. Most of the deaths have occurred after President Bush declared an end to active combat on May 1.

Israeli media reporting same information. It is 40km south of Baghdad.

Stupid comment in this article. Americans are being killed because they are not Muslims, through their militant Islamic ideology. It doesn't matter if Americans are occupying Iraq or not. The believers in this interpretation will follow non-Muslims where ever they may be in order to kill them. Iraq is a short walk from those regimes supporting and funding them, which is why many of them are drawn to Iraq right now.

Actually, there are several different groups attacking Americans for several different reasons.

Just because we disagree with all of them does not mean we can't recognize that the Iraqi "resistance" is a mishmash of violent political, religious and criminal elements pursuing a wide range of agendas instead of a single, monolithic movement.

This sort of turbulence follows and has followed every war ever fought. We just happen to be looking at Iraq these days.

I agree. There are some there who actually are fighting to restore the Baathist state as well. But all these groups are joined by their common goal of killing Americans and are working together, in my opinion.

Iraq is surrounded by this militant Islamic ideology which continues to sip into Iraq. The US must target those institutions sending terrorists to kill Americans, not just the terrorists.

It's a little different then say Germany after World War II. We defeated Nazism and the institutions spreading it, and anti-Semitic institutions in areas around Germany as well. We also took time to clear the minds of Germans and what they were taught to think about Jews, Gipsies, etc. That is why we were successful there. In Iraq, sure we defeated the regime itself; but the institutions and infrastructure inside regimes around Iraq and even in Iraq, which spreads the hatred of non-Muslims, are still intact.

Typical AP slant. Bush declared the end of major combat operations, not the end of active combat.

Don't count on it. Even back in the 80's they knew what they couln't say in public, but don't think that the forced brain washing changed them. I liven in an area relatively untouched by the ravages of the war where the people still had fond memories of Hitler and his government.

This is an update, from Reuters:

"Four U.S. soldiers were wounded and their Iraqi translator was killed in a small arms fire ambush 22 km (14 miles) south of Iskandariya (near Baghdad). Two civilian type SUVs were destroyed in the attack," a U.S. military spokeswoman said.

Any word on what unit this was? I know somebody who was going to be traveling south of Baghdad with a convoy and this concerns me.

President Bush was simply saying that the high intensity phase of combat had ended. He is correct.

It is current doctrine in the US Military. There is high, mid, and low intensity combat. Sometimes they phase into one another; sometimes a war is characterized from the start as one or the other; and sometimes the conflict is some kind of operation other than war.

When people say that Iraq is surrounded by this militant Islamic ideology which continues to slip into Iraq, are they echoing what is happening on our borders. Why does the U.S. refuse to realize that controlling the entrance to a zone is one way of keeping the bad guys out. The economic hurt would be an assisting factor. It would put pressure on the general populace to stop aiding the terrs.

Col. Oliver North recently said on the Roger Fredinberg Show that of the last 70 plus suicide bombers, not one was an Iraqi. Shut the Border down. Shoot to kill. Do that and nobody crosses the border. Better yet, next time there is a suicide bomber, there should be 10 cruise missiles landing in Syria.

The casualty count for February is on track to utterly plummet from previous months. US combat deaths this month are way under 20 so far.

Trust me on this. It won't be much easier for him once he gets back. If he gets some leave time once he's back and has a chance to get around for some fun and good times, swell, see he gets as big a slice of 'em as possible. If he wants to talk about things, swell, give him a good listen and try toi learn and appreciate what he went through, and don't let him *just* tell you about the rough part. And if he doesn't care to mention it at all, no problem, there'll likely be a time somewhere down the road when he does, maybe with you, maybe not.

But do NOT be surprised if being back is not real easy for him, either.

Do you mind my adding your comment to the homecoming tips thread?

A Veteran / Freeper in Iraq wrote it, and others are adding to the list.

SAM and snippy at the FoxHole, and Tonkin at the Canteen are both adding the thread link to their daily threads for visiting family members and friends of the troops, and I'm adding it to homecoming threads.

Your comments would be welcome.

Go for it. I'm always hesitant to give generalized, one-size-fits-all advice of that sort, but I figure those applying it will have a pretty good idea of what fits and what doesn't.

I'll take a look, and see if there's anything more I can add.
