Maoists abduct 300 school students in Nepal

Kathmandu, February 20

Maoists rebels in Nepal have abducted about 300 school students and half a dozen teachers from a school in mid-western Rolpa district, a teacher who witnessed the incident said on Friday.

The kidnappings occurred on Wednesday from Saiwang secondary school at Holeri village, teacher Khem Bahadur Budha said by telephone.

"Armed Maoists forced the students from grade six to 10 and teachers to go with them," Budha said, adding that he feared the students would be forced to undergo military training by the rebels and be drafted into their rebellion against the Nepalese authorities.

"The incident has terrified other students and teachers who have stopped going to schools, forcing the school management to close down hundreds of schools in the area," Budha said.

Maoists last week abducted more than 700 students and teachers in western Achham district, but released most of them after first enforcing their attendance at celebrations marking 8th anniversary of the launch of their "people's war".

Meanwhile, Nepal's security forces on Friday killed at least seven suspected Maoists during a clash in Bankatwa village in Banke district, southwest of here, an army source said.

The fight began when rebels tried to hurl socket bombs at a security force patrol, the source said. Separately, at least 11 armed Maoists surrendered to the army in the eastern Dhankuta and Pachthar districts on Friday, he said.

Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa announced plans to arm villagers to “help defend against Maoists” in November 2003. The scheme was included as a component of a unified command that would merge all armed and law-enforcement services and give them “special powers”. Despite official denials and some confusion about the government’s further implementation plans, the authorities have already started distributing weapons in some villages.
