WASHINGTON - American officials say U.S. forces will be needed in Iraq long after a sovereign government is restored this summer, but they have yet to work out the terms of a continued presence.

The U.S. administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, has also urged Italy and other countries to keep their troops in the country at least until December 2005, an Italian newspaper reported on Friday.

We are still in Germany.

Nato and the UN are still in Kosovo, (and doing a lousy job of it btw.)

BUT, I'm betting they will be out of Iraq before we're out of Yugoslavia.

I would be very surprised if we had any more than a division in Iraq by 2006. We are downsizing to 70K by the end of this year, as well we should.

We do not need huge formations in Iraq to conduct counterterrorist operations and black ops in Syria, Saudi, Jordan, and Iran.

Chris

Sadly you are probably right and that is foolish. People should take out their Risk boards and take a look -- Where are the most dangerious places on the Globe? We have bases in two strategic places -- Iraq & Afghanistan. If there's going to be more trouble, better there than here.

It's MSDNC, not MSNBC.

The Eye (aka Rick Kaplan) is personally overseeing things now for the Democrat National Conmittee. ;-)

I just did a drive by in the Department of Defense web page. It's a bit of an eye opener were we have troops. The data is a bit old, 1999.

You know, I was banned from playing that game by my platoon.

I won too often.

Nothing better than making an alliance with some neighbor and then stabbing him in the back when he's not expecting it and taking his countries from him.
