Hillary Clinton dons baker's smock for charity Published: Thursday, February 19, 2004
YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton donned a white baker's smock, sprinkled some crushed walnuts on a freshly frosted carrot cake and campaigned for the federal programs that have helped make the Greyston Bakery in Yonkers a success story.
The bakery, which helps support part of the philanthropic Greyston Foundation, makes the brownies for Ben & Jerry's ice cream and supplies gourmet cakes to fine restaurants while providing employment for the down-and-out. It is expanding by about half, to 100 workers, with a move next month into a building designed by Maya Lin.
''They could not have done what they've done without some help along the way,'' Clinton said during a tour Tuesday of the existing bakery.
Mentioning programs ranging from job training to providing funds for business equipment, she said ''many of these programs are on the chopping block'' in President Bush's proposed budget.

Greyston BakeryFounded in 1982 by Roshi Bernard Glassman as a way to employ a handful of his Zen students, the Greyston Bakery has grown into a profitable $4.3 million operation that employs and trains 55 hard-to-employ workers. The Bakery makes high quality cakes and tarts and is the sole supplier of fudge brownies for Ben & Jerry's ice cream and frozen yogurt. The companys profits support the community development work of Greyston Foundation.
$4.3 Million in Profits and they still need funding from the Goverment!??!!!!!!

greystonbakery Although the Foundation itself was not established until 1993 as a not-for-profit corporation, its work began much earlier. The Greyston Bakery opened in 1982. The Greyston Foundation serves as an umbrella organization managing the diverse programs all aimed at social improvement and personal economic empowerment. The programs include housing for the homeless, childcare, employment and job training, and residential and outpatient care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
So just so I have this straight, this company spends it's profits on "housing for the homeless, childcare, employment and job training, and residential and outpatient care for people living with HIV/AIDS" (all noble causes) instead of putting those moneys back into the company then IT EXPECTS THE GOV'T TO FUND THEIR EXPANSION!??

A New York stockbroker got stuck in some bad traffic on the way home months ago. He asked a cop on the beat, what was the holdup. Cop says, "it's Hillary in her motorcade. She stopped and is threatening to douse herself in gasoline and set herself on fire. She's depressed because Bill's running around on her more than ever, Bush upstaged her in Iraq, she's flipped out about Gore and Dean, and the Saddam capture put her over the edge. So we're taking up a collection for her."
The stockbroker asks the cop, "How much have you got so far? The cop replies, "About four and a half gallons, but alot of folks are still siphoning!"

This woman is a kook. She is only where she is now because someone put her there. Isn't it terrible to think that someone could be in office just because someone owes her favor? I don't know about you; but I don't see where that qualifies her for office.

I haven't bought Ben & Jerry's ice cream for nearly a decade ever since I read about the whacky, far left causes and politicians they funded with their profits. I think they are soul-mates with Howard Dean.
Anyway, Haggendaaz(sp?) is just as good, without the goofy names. And lately I've been buying Godiva ice cream, which is excellent. Try the vanilla, caramel, pecan 1-pint containers. Man, it's like you died and went to heaven.(Please don't tell me Godiva is really owned by Ben & Jerry's)
