Explains why he felt he had to lie and accuse others of doing what he had done. Teresa has stated that John has nightmares, flashbacks, etc. Not what you would expect from his public record of pulling people out of rivers, charging wounded soldiers, etc.
Would make a lot of sense if he was attacking civilians.
