It is true, but something tells me he could have made it on his own. That is the case for a lot of things. People sign up for something because it is offered. If it wasn't offered, they would find a way to make it happen. It would take a little longer, but it would be all the more gratifying once attained.

I know students who received scholarships from Greek organizations. I had an Italian-American scholarship offered to me once. There are lots of smart kids with no money and getting a ethnic scholarship doesn't imply one isn't smart. Personally I don't ever want to get involved in anything but studying so i don't take ethnic scholarship money.
