I just depend on Spybot and SpywareBlaster, though I do have Ad-Aware. I lost faith in Ad-Aware since they wanted to branch out into games and such. Nothing wrong with that, but there for several months they went without an updated "ref" file, and that's an eternity in the malware game.

Yes, Ad-aware from Lavasoft.com will get rid of it for free. NO! NEIN! NYET!
Go to LavasoftUSA.com or Lavasoft.de for the Free Ad-aware.
Lava Software is a different company.

No. I just change addresses as often as needed. For really pesky problems I reload the OS, or restore it from backups.
Better yet, I avoid things I'm not familiar with. If I'm really, really curious about something, but am suspicious, I load it to a different partition, and OS, but never to my primary OS partition.

Hey, all you helpful people: I ran Ad-Aware, and Spy-bot. We cleaned up a lot of stuff, and I regained (most) control of my internet. I had Google toolbar before as a pop-up blocker, and it worked well: I reloaded it (many of my settings and log-ins and been switched off by the unwanted program), and now it is apparantly blocking SOME pop ups, but I am still getting a LOT. AND there is a mysterious file in my program file list that wasn't there before, is NOT in the add/delete programs list, and will not delete from the list otherwise. It's list name is "2 bird does", and it's x won't delete name is "cornclose".
Any ideas on these two remaining glitches?
Thanks so much for all your help!

Drango, when I roll my mouse over the name 2 bird does in my Program File list, the little yellow box contains this: cornclose.exe, memo.exe, soapinternet.exe, and wave.exe.
Any of that mean anything to any of you-all. Thank you so much for your willingness to work through this mess with me. :-)

With regard to the pop-up problem, I can't supply an elegant solution, but I can suggest a couple of work arounds. A good stand-alone pop-up blocker is Panicware's Pop-up Stopper. A second line of defense is to use the Mozilla browser for most internet access - it has built in blocking. Both are free.
With regard to the other problem - have you tried poking around in the registry to see if you can manually delete the problem files?
