According to those who play, one of the most difficult pieces to play is a flamingo piece called Malaguena. (When done properly it sounds like 3 different players.

Those who do well include - Carlos Montoya, paco de lucia and of course Andre Segovia.

Some consider greatness as the ability to inspire others and producing lasting music. Thus....any list must include Link Wray who in the late fifties punctured the speaker of his fender amp and inspired the raunchy sound that was to later become heavy metal. His classic "Rumble" is still heard today in TV ads and various movie soundtracks.

I'd also add Reverend Horton Heat, Danny Gatton, Carl Perkins, Lester Flatt/Earl Scruggs, Gary Moore,
and of course John Lee Hooker who was good enough to accompany The Doors, Bonnie Raitt and Eric Clapton.

hmmmm and anyone who's listened to the original Woodstock album has to be awed by speed and nimble fingers of Alvin Lee?

There's a great mariachi version of "Malaguena" on Placido Domingo's CD, 100 Years of Mariachi. If the Net-knight and I never make it Spain for the flamenco, maybe we can at least get to Guadalajara for the mariachi.

Jimmy Page should reside at the #1 spot on any guitar greatest list.
SRV should be in the top 10.
Clapton too.

That being said, it's all personal taste anyway.

Dan Tyminski should be on any list also. Bluegrass is music too.

Alvin Lee with Ten Years After was phenonmenal. One of the first concerts I ever saw, Lee just strolls out on stage, smokin' a cigarette (those days are gone), jeans, t-shirt, crowd goes bonkers. It was great. No light-show or pyro-technics, just a$$-kicking R&R. Those were the days the acts would play for 2 1/2 hours or so. Takes me back!

I was always amazed when watching either Montoya and Segovia. I am not the music aficionado that you and Eagle are, but what ever they played I was mezmerized and astounded that it seemed the sound I was hearing could NOT be coming from just one guitar.

I saw them when ever they played anywhere near me.

When I lived in Santa Cruz some years ago, one of my roommates was a flamingo guitar player, as were several of his friends.

They would get together quite often, and I would do the palmas...if that is spelled right...You would always hear one of the novice players shout out "E" so the others would slow down so he could "catch up"

...and of course John Lee Hooker who was good enough to accompany The Doors, Bonnie Raitt and Eric Clapton.

Hay I love John Lee Hooker he was grate on his own too.

I have a CD of his in the Limonomonal Phenomozine along with Jimmy Reed and some other old timers.

Speaking of Jimmy Reed, I love his singing and his songs. Big Boss Man, Baby You Don't Have To Go etc.

John Lee Hooker (and just about everyone else important) played at SWEETWATER here in Mill Valley:

His license plate reads MR LUCKY, I kind of cut it off. I think that is a 53 Oldsmobile...

Some other names on that poster you might recognize...

Sorry about the flash, I'll get this fotographic thingie down one of these days.

BTW. all those pics are from inside the SWEETWATER.

Oh and this one too...

Actually, John Lee Jr. played a few miles away recently, unfortunately I was otherwize buzy so I missed him.

Have either one of you heard him?
