If the military was put on the borders right now how long in this political climate do you think they'd be dispatched before being revoked?? It would have to be an act of congress, after the elections. Right now the only effective manner is boosting the border patrol, then after these election get congress to pass a law that would get the National Guard on the border beyond 2008. Yes I agree, it just takes planning and the circling of wagons to get things to work.

Hmmmmmmmm....these are sad times indeed, when we need an "act of congress"...to do something that the President has already been sworn in to do....to "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States"...

Why not have some citizen groups patrol the borders? There was a time, before PC, that such an alternative would have received wide support and approval.

Putting the military on the border for the purpose of law enforcement would be in violation of the posse comitatus act. However having the government build a version of Hadrian's wall on the U.S./Mexican border along with a civilian auxillary backing up the Border Patrol would do a great deal to reduce the volume of illegals. If the military is in fact needed it would require that the Fed.Govt. to purchase land along the border from its civilian owners to create a federal reservation were the military could operate under DOD rules .
