Someone with military experience in general and Vietnam experience in particular can help me to understand how a guy staffing a patrol boat gets to see "free fire zones". Wasn't this a term which had meaning to aircraft, helicopter gunners, etc?

So how come Kerry was never brought up on war crimes charges? The Naval Investigative Service examined Kerry's charges and were unable to substantiate them. This is in Gunther Lewy's America in Vietnam.
The NIS determined that most of the VVAW activists were not Vietnam veterans, and most of their claims were fabricated.
However, the help that Kerry gave to the NVA, under whose flag he proudly marched while proclaiming his "shame" at being an American veteran, that was real.
