"Will somebody explain to me again what is relevant about what anyone did in the 1970s with regard to a presidential campaign 30 years later?"

"Character" for starters.

The severity of the wounds shouldn't be the issue for the Republicans, lest they look like they're trivializing actual combat sacrifices.

The angle should be that unlike McCain, who fought in Viet Nam and came home a stronger patriot, or Bush who has always supported American war efforts, Kerry returned a turn-coat who actively sought to undermine soldiers dying in the field.

Much of the anti-war efforts in the 70's were led by an honest desire to better define a poorly-executed campaign that had been requiring 18-year-old American boys to die for an entire decade.

But few people believed Beverly Hills Fonda or silver-spoon Kerry ever had American interests at heart.

Fonda got her marching orders from her first husband, Monsieur Vadim.

Wonder who signed Kerry's?

" Do I really have to tell these guys that the side that defines the issue - wins?"

Apparently.

Brinkley's credentials as a historian will make his report and opinion harder to dismiss than Drudge's. Anyone know his political affiliations, though? His biography of Dean Acheson struck me as Democrat-leaning, but his biography of James Forrestal at least attempted to be fair, and he's been affiliated with institutions named after Presidents of both parties (Theodore Roosevelt Association, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, Eisenhower Center for American Studies), so I'm not quite sure where in the political spectrum he falls. If he is pro-Democrat, I'd find it interesting that he's joined the attack on Kerry.

At any rate, what he says sounds credible. As I've already discussed/debated in other threads, Kerry's support of the antiwar movement, as well as Fonda's, predated Fonda's visit to Hanoi, going back to his college days at Yale when he was rooming with Harvey H. Bundy III and giving speeches echoing Senator J. William Fulbright's support of North Vietnam. Nor is this merely digging up 30-year-old dirt, because Kerry's support of the far left has been continuous since then, as evidenced by his support of Senator Fulbright's 1971 antiwar investigations, the nuclear freeze movement against Reagan's programs, the Institute for Policy Studies' pro-Sandinista propaganda, etc., leading up to his current alliance with Joseph Wilson to undermine the credibility of US intelligence.

I think you have just 'defined' the problem that plagues the Republican party leaders. I think they are entirely too clever at times, waiting for the RATS to implode on themselves.

You don't think people can change over 30 years? You don't think they can rethink their positions over that long a time?

Personally, I don't care if Kerry raped Jane Fonda while burning an American flag and I don't care if Bush drove drunk from Texas to Alabama while skipping out on Guard duty. Even if we accept that the worst of the charges are all true...

IT HAPPENED THIRTY F*CKING YEARS AGO! SO WHAT???

We have a war to fight, an economy to fix, a health care system in jeopardy of imploding, an out-of-control court system and national borders with more holes than Saddam's palaces right here in 2004. And the two candidates have a decade's worth of public speeches, votes and proposals to weigh one candidate against the other without having to revisit 1970, 1971 or 1972.

It's insulting to think campaigns have stooped to this.

Asked about the severity of Kerry's injuries, Brinkley told Malzberg, "They were minor wounds."

Well hell, lets see the records. You never know he might have had a hemoorhoid or a chancre sore.

Your point is not that important unless you think Bush Kerry has control of other peoples lives.

Thanks for seeing my point if not agreeing woth it by the way. You guys do know I am on your side on this fight. The thought that Clark will have a place in the Kerry admin - maybe even VP scares the hell out of me - just fight smart. Leave the emotional junk and smear stuff alone.

PS: I am also comming at this from someone who was born after the Vietnam war but thinks that fighting that war was wrong to begin with. I guess in that regard I represent millions of Americans. So I am sympathetic to those that wanted to get Americans out of Veitname but hate those protestors that waved communist flags and were more anti-American then anti-war. A great journalist Eric Severied died last week. He was conservative and was anti-war and anti-peace demonstrators who crossed that line into support of the communists.

Really irks me that the mainstream media hasn't picked up this too much. But what they have picked up are: the doctored Kerry, Jane photo, Bush's AWOL, Bush's AWOL, Bush's AWOL, Bush's AWOL, Kerry's Vietnam service, Bush's AWOL, Bush's AWOL. Nothing about what Kerry did after the war. They need enlightening.

Personally I don't give a crap about Kerry's wounds and I think that is petty bullcrap and should not be brought up at all. I was a young kid in the 60's and 70's and I had an older sister who was about 18 or 19. She was an anti-war hippy at the time and she scared the crap out of me many times with her hippy friends and their peace, love crap. I am well aware of what went on during that time.

Booster42 it is nice to see you sign up for posting today. Welcome. By the way I am a Viet Nam Veteran (DEROS 17 MAY 1969)and I didn't believe the war was a mistake only that our cutting and running was a mistake. Further, I worked in VA Hospital for years and spoke to hundreds if not thousands of RVN Veterans: almost to a person they believed what they did was right and necessary.

You are simply mistaken or a troll from DU.
