"Why not just open the link and read from the source page?
Doh!"
Many of them require registration or a membership.
That's why.

Tell me, just what makes you think that you're so special?
The fact is that if the registration process is circumvented widely there will be no incentive for any media outlet to have a free Internet site, then all of us will be losers.

You register because you choose to. If you want to share, that's fine. If the site doesn't want articles posted in full, they'll say so.
I just think you're exaggerating the danger, and making the reading of posts here unnecessarily tedious.
Not hugh or series, just unnecessary.

Every column Steyn has one of those sentences. Here is the one from this column:
If [Kerry had] said, ''We band of brothers . . . We're a little older, we're a little grayer, but we still know how to get high, murder the gooks and rape their womenfolk,'' it would at least have been consistent with his congressional testimony.

Why not just open the link and read from the source page? Doh!
Because the source page won't be there forever.

But archiving is one of the major copyright-infringment no-nos.
It was a central point in the WaPo/LAT lawsuit against Free Republic, and it was the reason that FR had to delete all the old archives.
Most media sites charge for archive searches and free archives cut into their revenue.
And just because an article isn't archived on FR doesn't mean it isn't available.
The original thread is there with the cite and that means you can almost always go there and buy the article.

Every time I read Steyn I think, "man, what a great article...this is his best ever!"
Then the next one comes along...although I do think this is his best ever.
