1971 Photo of Kerry Doctored
newsday.com ^ | 02/14/04 | Michael Rothfeld

As a 20-year-old photographer documenting the country's struggle over the Vietnam War, Ken Light snapped the picture of John Kerry at a peace rally in Mineola. It captured the future senator alone at a podium, squinting into the sun.

Light did not photograph Jane Fonda on that warm June Sunday in 1971. The actress, who is reviled by many Vietnam veterans for her vocal stance against the war, did not even attend.

But when opponents of the Democratic presidential hopeful began e-mailing Light's picture to one another four days ago, it depicted Fonda standing by Kerry's side. The photo had been doctored.

Dag Vega, a spokesman for Kerry's campaign, said, "The smear tactics have started already."

The Web site's creator, Ted Sampley, a Vietnam veteran from North Carolina, said he received the doctored photo by e-mail on Wednesday from a woman in Richmond, Va.

"Thought you might want to include this pic on your site," said the note from Loree Siemek, with an attachment called "HanoiJohn.jpg," a takeoff on "Hanoi Jane," the derisive nickname given to Fonda by her critics during the Vietnam era. It is made to look like a newspaper clipping, headlined "Fonda Speaks to Vietnam Veterans at Anti- War Rally," with an Associated Press photo credit. Sampley said he was immediately skeptical, and e-mailed it to some friends who concluded it was faked. He did not post it.

Siemek, 34, reached by phone, said she found the picture on a conservative Internet message board and had no idea it was phony.

They can, but it'll be tough implying that images with a Corbis watermark was faked. They use image services every day, and any thinking man knows that.

sigh The "intellectual" Leftists won't, of course.

This might be a good time to ask about the propriety of Registered asking for money on his homepage:

Any thought that the media did the photo editing and are now blaring stories about it to deflect the focus of the issue? How do you know it was a conservative that did it in the first place? Are we goin gto take their word that it was "found on a conservative message board"?

No, it was one of ours, sorry to say.

Regisgtered's work is the best out there.

Multiple Freepers (myself included) warned Registered about what would happen to that work. That it would be used by the media left to discredit real photographs.

It was Freeper Registered. Go check this thread. It's mentioned several times.

Regisgtered's work is the best out there.

He created the "Sore Loserman" signs during the Florida recounts in 2000.

I've seen about five different stories saying that "the" Kerry photo was doctored.

I have yet to see this infamous doctored photo.

All I have seen is this photo of Kerry sitting there. It's not doctored and Jane Fonda is not in it.

What the hell is going on?

Can someone tell me WHICH photo was "doctored"?

The only Kerry-FONDA photo I have seen has her in the foreground and a slightly fuzzy Kerry in the background, as they are listening to some other speaker.

I have the impression that these vaguely-headlined "Kerry photo doctored" stories are designed to get everyone thinking THAT photo was doctored, as well.

Please don't go off topic on threads. Posting the same unrelated stuff on multpile threads does not help the discussion. This thread is about Kerry's anti-war photos, not his affairs.

I think it is on topic. It shows what the media is doing. Concentrating on a photo being passed amongst people, all the while there's a claim against Kerry with at least some credibility, enough to warrent investigation, and we're hearing pretty much nothing.

We didn't shop this photo around. Our likely people to use it NEVER did, yet the media manages to use it.

Puppet Chris Lehane (with Bill and Hill's arm up his butt working his jaw) goes around shopping the "Kerry Intern Story" like mad and there's not as many words in print as there are in this Newsday article.
