"In recent months, 27 national and local grass-roots anti-war groups got grants — mostly $5,000 to $30,000 — from the Iraq Peace Fund of the San Francisco-based Tides Foundation. A new Tides initiative is trying to raise $1 million more.

A Tides beneficiary, United for Peace and Justice, is the national coalition that organized large New York City marches on Feb. 15 and March 22."

Organize a candlelight vigil at dusk in your community to show your commitment to peaceful and just solutions to conflict. February 24: Stop the Corporate Invasion of Iraq
Following on the heels of the military invasion of Iraq, another invasion began: a corporate invasion by Halliburton, Bechtel, and other U.S. companies that were awarded millions in “reconstruction” contracts. Nine months into the occupation, Iraqi schools are still in disrepair, electricity is intermittent, and the water is not safe to drink. On February 24, protest the corporations that are making millions in Iraq, and speak out for Iraqi workers’ rights and self-determination.

March 4: Books Not Bombs!
On March 5, 2003, thousands of young people in more than 450 high schools and colleges nationwide participated in a Student Strike for Books Not Bombs and against the impending war on Iraq. The strike was initiated by the National Youth & Student Peace Coalition (NYSPC), a broad coalition fighting back against the militarization of our lives and our world. One year later, it has become even clearer that our generation will continue to be betrayed by this government's drive to make our country an empire. Join us as we stand up again as a generation this year, with a national Books Not Bombs Day of Action on March 4. More »

Turn Up the Heat: UFPJ Adopts Strategic Action Plan for 2004
As the occupation of Iraq becomes an ever-greater quagmire and the Bush Administration’s assaults on democracy continue, United for Peace and Justice begins 2004 with a renewed commitment to fight the warmongering, empire-building policies of our government. Over the next year, the nation’s attention will gradually shift toward the 2004 presidential elections. UFPJ has adopted an ambitious plan of action designed use the opportunities provided during the election year to focus greater attention on the ongoing reality of war and empire and the intensifying war at home. We will maintain an activist presence and increase pressure on policymakers so as to emerge as a stronger and more vibrant coalition regardless of who is elected in the 2004 Congressional and Presidential votes.

Stop FBI Spying on Anti-War Movement
Dismayed by growing opposition to the occupation of Iraq and its militaristic foreign policies, the Bush administration has now resorted to spying on the antiwar movement under the cover of fighting "terrorism." On November 23, the New York Times disclosed a confidential FBI memorandum detailing FBI efforts to engage in coordinated, nationwide surveillance of United for Peace and Justice and other organizations in the peace movement. Defend your right to express opposition to the Bush Administration's policies. Take Action: Sign UFPJ's online petition urging the Senate and House Judiciary Committees to stop all surveillance of the anti-war movement and to launch an investigation into these spying activities. Save The Date!
August 29, 2004, The World Says No to the Bush Agenda

On every issue – from environmental regulations and international treaty participation to workers' rights, civil rights and civil liberties – George W. Bush's Administration has pushed for unprecedented and destructive changes in U.S. foreign and domestic policy that even more sharply favor corporations and the wealthy, especially Bush Administration supporters, at the expense of the people of the world and our environment. Meanwhile, the Bush Administration shamelessly uses the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001, to justify its aggressive and militaristic policies. In its most recent attempt to exploit the grief and fear provoked by September 11, the Republican Party pushed back its 2004 convention to August 30 through September 2, 2004, and will hold it in New York City, not far from Ground Zero. We will not be silent: On February 15, 2003, millions of people all over the world took to the streets in protest with the message, The World Says No to War. On August 29, 2004, we will come together in New York City and in cities throughout the world to declare, The World Says No to the Bush Agenda! More »
