They must have done some market research into who plays basketball = who eats at McDonalds.

IIRC, basketball on TV is BIG in China.
So, this is a smart move for McDonalds...could really up traffic to their
stores in Beijing, etc.

Besides that, Yao seems to have quickly caught onto what the American public
likes in sports figures...a good sense of humor, able to come back after
bad games, and not too cocky.

I know a lot of it's the work of Madison Avenue, but Yao's appearances in
the VISA (?) commercial (along with Yogi Berra), the Apple commercial with "Mini-Me"
and some others have been consistently good advertizing material.

Now Yao just needs to keep the ego in check, pants zipped up at the right times,
and only have good-buddy handshakes with law enforcement officers.
