IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 11, 2004

Bill Jones Runs From His Record and the Debates

Toni Casey Outraged at his Refusal to Debate

(Sunnyvale, CA) - February 11, 2004 - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Toni Casey today says, "Bill Jones is running from his record on taxes and keeping Republican primary voters from making an informed choice for a candidate to oppose Barbara Boxer."

"Over 45% of the Republican primary voters are still undecided and we candidates have a responsibility to debate our positions, as often and in front of as many voters as possible," said Casey. "Apparently, Bill Jones believes that he should be anointed the Republican nominee in a contest to see who gets to take on Barbara Boxer," Casey continued.

Bill Jones has used his influence around the state to bail out of the San Diego Lincoln Club Debate that was set for February 18th, the Hispanic 100 U.S. Senatorial Forum that was scheduled for February 19th, and the prestigious Simon Wiesenthal Center televised candidate debate that was to be February 23rd.

"I would like the opportunity to compare my record of fiscal conservatism with Bill Jones' record of supporting increased taxes on Californians," Casey continued. "Voters in California deserve an explanation from Bill Jones as to why he cast the deciding vote when he was in the California legislature to raise taxes on working class people in California; they deserve an opportunity to see the candidates side-by-side and evaluate their positions and abilities to determine who is best equipped to defeat Barbara Boxer."

"There are big differences between my record of fiscal conservatism and Jones' support for increasing taxes; my record of putting California first on immigration and Bill Jones' willingness to support laws that make it easier for illegal immigrants to stay in the United States," added Casey. "There are clear differences in my opposition to cutting pork barrel spending and Jones' enrichment from ethanol programs that have huge federal subsidies that taxpayers neither need nor want."

"I'm willing to debate Bill Jones at any time and at any place," said Casey. "I'm not afraid to debate Bill Jones and as the nominee I look forward to debating Barbara Boxer."

Toni Casey was a senior presidential appointee of President George W. Bush at the Small Business Administration. She is a three-time Mayor of Los Altos Hills and holds an MBA and MS from Stanford University. She has been a consultant to high-technology executives, owned and managed several small businesses, and represented biotechnology firms to the state legislature. Her wide breadth of experience in business and government at local, county, state, and federal levels best qualifies her to serve California in the U.S. Senate.

Not a Casey supporter (GO HOWARD GO), but we definitely need some exposure with some televised debates. What are you afraid of, Jones? You're an experienced debater.

Well, if you've seen Jones debate, you know why he's avoiding them. Even Bill Simon made him look lame. Makes you wonder why he thinks he can beat Boxer.

I'm not a rabid Jones supporter but I don't blame him for avoiding the Hispanic 100 U.S. Senatorial Forum .

I wouldn't either if I wasn't extremely fluent in Spanish or particularly interested in being elected to a position in a foreign government.

My question was a bit rhetorical, as Jones wants to cruise to a primary victory without much fanfare. Typical of a front runner with everything to lose. I'll defend Jones a little bit here even though I'm not supporting him. We watched the two televised debates (San Jose and Long Beach. The convention debate, which I didn't see, was not televised so I couldn't judge that one).

In both, most felt at the time Jones had a slight advantage over the green Simon, especially in that first debate. Riordan of course bombed Howard Dean style.

It was interesting for me reliving those live threads ;-)

That said, Boxer will likely eat Jones alive much like she did with Fong in '98 or like Gray Davis did with Dan Lungren. Jones will need to harness all the fire he had against Riordan and then some if he wins the nomination.

I only saw two debates for the 2002 primary, too. I thought Simon came out best, probably because of his position on the issues, and I can't remember much about Jones except that he was pretty bland.
Riordan bombed worse than Dean (who at least is very animated!).

Anyway, why not hold the Senate debates without Jones, just as some recall debates were held without Schwarzenegger (whom everybody could recognize)?

Roger Hedgecock has a radio debate scheduled
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 24TH
with Bill Jones and Howard Kaloogian also Toni Casey and Rosario Marin.
I think Roger's debates are held at 4PM.

I didn't notice this before...

I don't know where you find info on ethanol subsidies,
but cotton farming sure seems to be profitable for the family of Bill Jones:

USDA Subsidies 1995-2002 to Jones family businesses:

J & J Farms $697,942
Sarek Farms $976,348
Jones Villere Farms $1,366,040
Llanada Farms $1,105,300

Total $4,145,630

LOL! What goes around... comes around...

IIRC, EWG is tied into some of Arnold's crooked scam artist buddies in the NRDC. Yet Arnold endorses Jones!

Sigh. Well, I guess one would say that it's all realted to the Kohler of money?

Koehler money is closely related to Enron money, as one of the Koehlers was with Enron when it merged with Portland General Electric.

I guess the Bill Jones Ethanol partnership with Koehler will be a bit more profitable than the Cotton Farming, I mean Cotton subsidies, business.

Glad you asked ;-)

Howard Kaloogian is da man! True conservative. He has what it takes to take on somebody as dirty as Boxer. He won't cover in the corner.

Bill Jones is adequate at best, has the best name recognition, but may not have what it takes when Boxer gets her fangs in Jones.

Rosario Marin is a squish. Toni Casey was a Democrat as recently as five years ago. 'Nuff said.

Everybody else is below the radar.

But feel free to judge for yourself...
