Yep. Kerry, by law, will have to wait until July for SS protection. I guess Mrs. Heinz will either have to pay for her hub's security, or the DNC, or Congress will have to change the law. Wonder how Kerry voted on that bill in 1997.

That 120 day before the general clause is interesting. That must be new (or maybe the SS can waive it) because I remember in 1996, Pat Buchanan had a Secret Service detail during the GOP primaries.
Frankly, I was surprised to learn that the Democrat candidates don't have details yet.

My understanding is that the President can provide protection for anyone he wants. After 9/11 SS protection was assigned to several top members of Bush's cabinet that previously didn't have it.
