Actually, it was "I thought happiness was Lubbock, Texas in my rearview mirror.", a song by Mac Davis. Having grown up in Lubbock and a short career in Hollyweird, the song was about believing that we'll be happier "if only".
In Mac's case, he thought he'd be happy anywhere but Lubbock, and he really thought Hollyweird would make him happy. He discovered that that wasn't the case.
