Let me get this straight: These guys are all Republican candidates seeking the nomination for a U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Peter Fitzgerald (R).

Anyone know who the good guys are among these Pubs and who's the likely Rat opponent? And what are the chances ? - seems's like a Dem state.

Those questions have debatable answers.

I just see a primary where there are several solid conservative choices:

Jack Ryan, investment banker-turned-teacher
Andy McKenna, paper company prez
Steve Rauschenberger, respected state senator
Jonathan Wright, state rep (longshot)

... and then there's Jim Oberweis, who claims to have had a conversion on the pro-life issue after previously likening pro-life views to those of the Taliban, and who has suddenly discovered that he doesn't like illegal immigration, just in time for the primary. My view is that Oberweis will say anything he thinks will get him elected, and that he is not to be trusted. Then there's Gen. John Borling, who's unabashedly pro-abort, and pro-draft, too, which is a little odd.

As far as the general election, I think the Republicans have good candidates and will be competitive with Ryan or McKenna, at least, and I like our match-ups against the Democrat candidates (the D primary is wide open). I think Jack Ryan is the most electable, and he's a strong conservative, so I'm supporting him.

There have been no match-up general election polls, at least no public ones.
