ROTA NAVAL STATION, Spain  -- Combat Conditioning was taught last week to members of the Marine Corps Security Forces Europe in Rota. The techniques are supposed to simulate marching, hand-to-hand combat and other job skills.

The Marines at Rota have been ordered to employ Combat Conditioning in their daily workouts. The rest of the corps might be next.

The old PT might have had Marines doing some quick stretches, jumping jacks and squat thrusts. Then they' head out for a three-mile run, and that would be PT for the day.

i seem to recall the order "squat thrusts forever"...on too many occasions. Semper Fi

You will not necessarily rise to the occasion ..more likely..you will default to your level of training...

"The Rota Marines have different jobs but are all sentries in one way or another."

And, wisely, every Marine is a rifleman.

"The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat."

And Marines for centuries have known that you always should train in the manner in which you will fight....

I don't understand what they're doing. More precise pushups, okay. But how do you "simulate marching" and why not just march?

"Last summer, for example, Marines from Rota were sent to Monrovia, Liberia, to protect the U.S. Embassy and civilians during unrest in the western African country."

No surprises here. From the Marine Corps Hymn: ".....to the shores of Tripoli" and "we've fought in every clime and place where we could take a gun"....
