At that time, not surprising. I was an Air Force 1st Lt at that same time, and got out 6 months early of my 4 year commitment. I was coming back from 18 months in Thailand, and it made more sense to let me go than to find some other short tour. I didn't even need to make up an excuse of going to school or any such. The USAF was looking for opportunities to let you off at that time. They were downsizing from Vietnam.
