All we need is a Free Republic candidate.

FR has a candidate, haven't you been reading?

Your seasoned friend might enjoy reading The Fourth Turning. An excellent book.

"No one has talked much about the Republicans moving their National Convention to the end of August; their Presidential nomination won’t be final until the first week in September. But it doesn’t take a conspiracy theorist to understand how this helps to negate dissent within the conservative wing of the Party. Traditionally, independent Presidential campaigns begin gaining momentum after the Democratic and Republican Conventions have finalized their platform. With the Republicans waiting until a month before the National election to finalize their platform, the Independents have less time to dissimulate it. The Republicans have long understood the ramifications of the party moving in more liberal direction and they are going to use every means possible to negate the dissent of the more intelligent conservatives within the flock."

I don't think i've ever seen this expressed before. Interesting and worth cogitating on.

I don’t think you compare the viability of third party candidates in the manner you suggest. Independent candidates are a phenomenon on themselves and the political climate is different in each election. The current climate suggests a third party candidate would do very well this year.

In 1992 Perot garnered 19 times more votes than the all independent votes cast in 1988. By the logic you suggest it’s possible an independent candidate could get more than 70% of the popular vote in 2004.

I think Ron Paul would be a viable third party candidate. He's already sewn up his relection in the House, so he'd have nothing to lose. Though he's a Libertarian in a Republican suit, I think Reformers and Constitutionalists wouldn't mind the compromise. Unfortunately he's not interested.

"Oddly enough I was just idly wondering what would happen if Hunter Thompson sunk his teeth into this election. Especially if he collaborated with P.J O'Rourke."

I'm still leaning towards you as a write in candidate.

I have made comments on a post like this. But IMHO, we will never again see a third party candit[sp]. The current 2 parties have made it impossible for a third to win anything of major importance. we are consirded[sp] kooks,wackoos, & ect...Just we believe in an old outdated idea called the Constution & the Bill of Rights.
I hate to say that it may have to take a civil war to bring things back into proper focus. The blood of our fathers,mothers,sisters & brothers will run in the streets, & the un will invade to save us from our selves led the the eurocraps! They will say "We told you that your little experiment in democracy[sp] would fail. Now you will follow us into the style of socialism/communism just like the little lemmings that you will be. Just listen to comasar hillary,kerry,dean ect..."
But, before I let that happen to my beloved country, I would start with them!

I pledge alligence to the flag of the United States of America;
And to the Republic, for which it stands;
One nation,
Under GOD,
With liberty, & justice for all!

Ant? Hardly. If I recall, Perot, one little ant, garnered many millions of votes. He happened to be the wrong man at the right time. Perhaps in the near future the right man will step forward. If that happens, the "ant" may well bring the elephant to its knees.
