SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- An infant girl died Saturday after surgery to remove a second head, her mother said.
A medical team completed the operation Friday evening but said 8-week-old Rebeca Martinez had been susceptible to infection or hemorrhaging. The baby died 12 hours after the surgery, believed to be the first of its kind.

Was the second head "alive"? Or was it just a lump of flesh?

Was the second head "alive"? Or was it just a lump of flesh? There was a part of the story that when the normal head breast fed, the second head's mouth would move.

It had partial brain, etc...so it was "functioning" along with her brain...attached.

Very sad, indeed. May God comfort her parents, and the medical team who tried very much to save her.

The maternal side of me is always upset and sad over the news of an infants death.
The morbid tomboy side of me wants to see a picture of her.

had this child not died and had no surgury she would have been unable to lift her head after 3 months I read. She most likely would have died regardless.
Sad but I am glad they did try. May they both rest in peace and may medical science progress to prevent this in the future.

I remember yesterday, upon hearing the doctors declare the surgery a success, thinking "Isn't that a bit premature?"
Sadly, it was.

Me too and also, where's the debate about whether the second head had a soul. Seriously. Why are we saying she and then they.

That's so sad. Prayers.

The second head, which doctors said threatened the girl's development, grew from the top of her skull and had its own partly developed brain, ears, eyes and lips. Sad the child died, but where are the Right To Life people?
Wasn't this second head its own little person, with brain and presumptively, soul?
Weren't the doctors calously intending to murder it for the sake of making the other child's life more convenient?
Surely ther child's death is God's punishment on her parents and doctors for doing something abominable?

The second head showed some brain activity according to earlier news reports.

Try not to turn a tragedy into pro-choice political points.
It's unbecoming.

Very sad, prayers for the family. I was so happy this morning when I read the surgery a success, but I was happy too soon.
