In other words the story is that the documents should have been stamped "classified" but someone forgot to do that. Oops.

The Treasury Department launched an investigation after CBS broadcast an episode of "60 Minutes" that contained an interview during which O'Neill held up a document marked "secret." Yes, well. This dumbass should be in prison. I've signed documents indicating the penalties if I did exactly what this government parasite did.

Who gave them to him? I smell a rat.

If President Bush is reelected, there should be a purge of rat holdouts.

Many of them were stamped "classified" or "secret". That how they found out about them...they saw the papers in photos so marked.
As I see it, they should have been return and not have been used until they were cleared as declassified -- this whitewash notwithstanding.
To: Destro
It doesn't matter if the documents were properly marked or not. It doesn't matter who gave the stuff to him.
O'Neill has a legal obligation to safeguared classified info.
In this case, he knew he had classified, because somebody saw the markings on a page he held up for television.

Did this stuff get stamped before O'Neill saw it or after? Because if it was after and O'Neill left with it...How do we know he didn't leave with anything and did indeed ask for all the documentation?

This was quick work on CNN's part, BTW, to clear O'Neill so quickly. Easy to see where their priorities are. And will they be embarrassed if it turns out their sources were a little premature...

Indeed, if you cannot find smudges on people because they're clean, leave chocolate all over the place as a temptation- they will either brush against it by accident, or be attracted by it and give it a try.

Here's another question: were those docs deliberately left unstamped?

They were given to him on a CD. He claims he never looked at them on the CD, that he just handed the CD to the rat writer.
IMO, he failed to practice due diligence with classified documents and should receive some punishment at least.
