Eh, looks like it wasn't underwater, and actually for tsunami purposes 7.1 actually isn't really big enough for anything damaging (UNLESS it causes an underwater landslide, as the quake on the Northeast Side of New Guinea did a few years ago.)

M=7: "Major" earthquake, causes serious damage up to ~100 km (recent Taiwan, Turkey, Kobe, Japan, and California earthquakes).

Yeah I am new but I think that alot of this stuff happening in that area, being the middle east and southeast Asia has something to do with the way those people live their lives. And I do believe that God does let loose his wrath on those who hold sin(i.e. the Muslim terrorists in those areas) as a virtue(i.e. the suicide bombers going to heaven and stuff like that.)

Magnitude measurement is pretty complicated and it can be months before there's a scientific consensus on a precise magnitude for a major quake. There are also multiple methods of calculating it.

Soon after a quake NEIC seems like they're the ones that get closest to what the final magnitude turns out to be.

The high levels of seismic activity from the Middle East to Indonesia are the result of having the most active plate boundaries in the world; India and Australia are moving North faster than any other plate in the world is moving.

This has been happening for millions of years, long before there were humans, or Islam. People just happened to migrate to these areas and develop whatever religions they developed.
