FRom the Daytona Beach News-Journal -- Info about the track. Good article about the track and surrounding area.
LAKE LLOYD
Any aerial view of the track is dominated by the 44-acre lake that sits just inside the backstretch, and nearly stretches from the exit of Turn 2 to the entrance to Turn 3. The man-made lake is a byproduct of Daytona's famed high banks. Dirt for the banks came from where the lake now sits.
In the early days, the speedway was host to a powerboat race, but after a boat pilot was killed in a crash, the boat races went away. A couple of race cars have wrecked and found their way into the lake, but due to barricading that can't happen now.
The lake was once home to a Speed Weeks fishing tourney, featuring many drivers and crew members, but that ended in the early 1990s.
A variety of freshwater fish live in the lake, but there's little fishing done there. Hahne had about 100 carp put in the lake a few years ago to help keep the in-water grasses controlled. An aquatic company comes out occasionally to clean the above-water weeds.
Former Speedway president John Graham had a fountain added a few years ago.
Hi Norm! Talk to ya Sunday AM. And hopefully, following the sprint, this guy will be a household name.
