If the CEO, or the CFO of a company made an error of this magnitude he would not be just given a pat on the shoulder and told not to worry about it, it was a simple honest mistake.

Of course, if it's our guy who screwed up, we are happy to overlook incompetence and even try a little failed sarcasm if someone is so bold as to be trouble by such gross failure.

That's just the way life is sometimes.
