Thanks. I remembered the "8"s and that it was a Pakistani paper, but my memory failed on the rest. Part of getting older I guess.
It was 1988 according to the paper. I *do* recall (at least if memory does not fail me again), that this was the time of the reported first "loose nuke". I know that Lebed came forward in 1997, but he was confirming what everyone was fearing.
The first rumor of loose nukes that I remember reading in a newspaper (might have been a Russian one, not Pakistani)was some that disappeared during the Nagorno-Karabakh fighting in the late 1980s. (war over a small piece of land between the Soviet regions of Armenia and Azerbaijan (at the time).
This AQ Khan thing is the thread that when pulled will cause the sleeve to fall off (IMHO).
And if our security had been as terrible 10 years ago, and Tim McVeigh had stolen a small nuke with American plutonium from the Pantex facility in Amarillo, and sold it to the Chechens who then smuggled it into Russia, I guess we'd be pretty jumpy too.
