What the heck is this orthodox Christian doing in the United Church of Christ denomination? Most of the ministers of that denomination are quasi-Unitarian.

I had the same question. The UCC is decidedly anti-evangelical.

Other stories on him that I've read suggest the the being of light he talked to spoke some kind of New Age pantheism stuff.

God seems pleased to scatter His true Believers througout all manner of questionable groups . . . including all manner of denominations.
Even some pharisees of Jesus' dusty pathed days believed.
