Spike Lee blasts Jackson's breast-baring
Associated Press ^ | February 4, 2004 | DAVID BAUDER

NEW YORK -- Film director Spike Lee criticized Janet Jackson's surprise breast-baring during the Super Bowl halftime show last weekend as a "new low" of attention-getting antics by entertainers.

Meanwhile, Jackson issued another apology in a videotape released to the media. The pop star had apologized Monday night in a written statement.

"I am really sorry if I offended anyone. That was truly not my intention," she said. "MTV, CBS, the NFL had no knowledge of this whatsoever, and unfortunately, the whole thing went wrong in the end."

At the end of their duet Sunday, Justin Timberlake snatched off part of Jackson's bustier on stage, revealing a breast clad only in a sun-shaped "nipple shield" to some 89 million viewers.

Lee, speaking at Kent State University's regional campus in Stark County, Ohio, on Tuesday night, said there has been a decline in artistry.

He said it's not enough to be a good singer, and that entertainers "have to do something extra" -- such as the openmouthed kiss Madonna gave Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during the MTV Video Music Awards in August.

"What's gonna be next? It's getting crazy, and it's all down to money. Money and fame," said Lee, the director of "Malcolm X" and "Do the Right Thing." "Somehow the whole value system has been upended."

The rest of the article:

Jackson's spokeswoman, Jennifer Holiner, said a red lace garment was supposed to remain when Timberlake tore off the outer covering. But widespread questions remained about the intent.

The one-second flashing continued to cause reverberations Tuesday, as CBS said it would institute a video delay system to avoid any recurrence at the Grammy awards.

Timberlake, who is nominated for five Grammy Awards, is scheduled to perform on Sunday's telecast. Jackson is supposed to present an award.

"Unfortunately, we cannot count on those who appear on our air to live up to our standards," said Martin Franks, CBS executive vice president.

CBS faces a Federal Communications Commission investigation into whether the Super Bowl show violated decency laws, with potential fines of up to $27,500. If applied to each CBS station, the fine could reach into the millions.

FCC chief Michael Powell said Tuesday that the agency had begun a formal investigation, and a letter was sent to CBS. "It's well under way," he said.

All five commissioners expressed concern about the Super Bowl broadcast, but Powell declined to speculate on what the FCC would do once the investigation was finished.

Powell said he wasn't happy with the halftime show in general, which featured performances by Nelly and Kid Rock before the bump-and-grind duet with Jackson and Timberlake. Nelly gestured toward his crotch, while Kid Rock draped himself in an American flag-designed poncho.

Tom Freston, chairman of MTV Networks, said he welcomed the FCC's investigation, which he said will prove that the show's producers and broadcasters had no prior knowledge of the stunt. MTV produced the halftime show.

"We were really ripped off. We were punk'd by Janet Jackson," Freston said, referring to MTV's reality show that makes celebrities the butt of practical jokes.

LOL. This from a guy that sued Spike TV for using his name.

Didn't Walmart refuse to carry certain CD's and video games due to questionable content?

Why doesn't some retailer take a similar stand regarding Justin and Janet's "art".

It would make a statement, as well as being a brilliant marketing ploy.

My sense is that this will all blow over until the next big thing. There may be some minor penalties, but nothing shocking. : )

"Spike" Lee versus Spike-TV

I suspect that was all public relations for Spike-TV.

You know my pet peeve has come up here! I hate these apologies that say " I am sorry if I offended anyone". That is not an apology. An apology says kI am sorry, I will not do this again, it was offensive. why can't people acknowledge they did something wrong when they apologise. If they can't, they ought not apologise. So there!

Maybe, but I doubt it. Spike TV came out looking ok, but Spike Lee came out looking pretty foolish. So unless they paid him mucho dinero to look foolish, I don't think it was a PR ploy. Spike Lee just wanted to get paid.

Just think how desperate Janet Jackson must be to sell her music and concert tickets! She's 37, a has-been, over the hill diva wannabee, and she must be so jealous of the younger female singers.

When that ugly boobie popped out, it's a wonder it hadn't turned pea green with envy, after Beyoncé Knowles' performance singing The National Anthem.

Precisely! I have the same thoughts whenever I see the qualifier "if I offended anyone..." attached to a so-called apology. That seems to lay part of the blame on the person who was offended. So I guess if noone was offended then she wouldn't be sorry? That somehow it is wrong (read: judgemental) for someone to be offended? Nope, not an apology in my book.

"there has been a decline in artistry"

This is my main objection, though the low level of artistry cannot be seperated from the pitch for prurience and the sickening lowering of all standards.

Spike Lee's is a brilliant mind, and he is capable of very fine art. He is far too intelligent to mistake iconoclasm for innovation or some kind of tantrum for art. On the other hand, he is capable of producing and recognizing good art and genuine innovation.

Spike Lee and others of his capability should come forward and lead the way. They should become active in squelching such shabby and mediocre displays as the Superbowl half-time show.

Actually, I do not object to nudity. Some of the finest and best art includes it.

What I object to is low-level "art" and low-level morality. The presence or absence of nudity per se is beside the point.

Then it should have been sewn to the bodice, not the tearaway cup, silly.

I think you are right. She must be desperate. The irony is that she has a great voice. I liked a lot of her songs way back when. I think if she toned down her act (read- boob flashing antics) and promoted her vocal talent, she would probably have a much longer, more lucrative career.

Nelly gestured toward his crotch, while Kid Rock draped himself in an American flag-designed poncho.

These statements are both inaccurate. The first guy GRABBED his crotch several times, and the second guy was wearing a flag with a hole cut out of it.
