By gosh if this isn't always the way. The equipment gets into the field and the dog faces out there tinker with it and come up with field modifications that dramatically improve the base line equipment.

I remember seeing a PBS show during the "end-game" of the Cold War.
Hate to admit it, but when I heard Soviets who'd defected from the USSR
(and had served in the Red Army)...I refused to believe their assertion
that in Red Army infantry, usually only the squad leader could read a map.
There surely have been dedicated, efficient and educated armies from
totalitarian states...but I still put my money on the military of free countries
(as long as they haven't slid down a slippery slope like today's Vichy French).
