Edwards ahead in S.C., exit polls show

(Updated 7:01 p.m.) U.S. Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina was handily winning South Carolina’s Democratic presidential primary, according to exit polls conducted throughout the day.

Voting was coming to a close at 7 p.m. after a turnout that dwarfed the last Democratic presidential primary 12 years ago.

Surveys of voters indicated Edwards had the support of 44 percent of voters, compared to 31 percent for U.S. Sen. John Kerryof Massachusetts, and 9 percent for the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Exit polls are not official but are often accurate in predicting election day winners. More than 1,250 people around the state were interviewed Tuesday as they left the polls.

Official results will become available soon as party officials count the paper ballots cast in all 46 counties.

A victory for Edwards would mean he lives to campaign another day, as the S.C. native had declared he had to win here to carry on.

A loss for Kerry might not mean much, as he was expected to carry at least five of the other six states voting today. Still up in the air was Oklahoma, where both Edwards and retired Gen. Wesley Clark were challenging.

State party officials said turnout was strong, easily surpassing the 114,000 who voted in the last Democratic presidential primary, in 1992.

“In some precincts in Richland and Lexington county, more people have already voted today than voted in the state's most competitive Democratic primary ever — the 1994 gubernatorial contest,” S.C. Democratic chairman Joe Erwin said.

Republicans, meanwhile, were eager to remind everyone that more than 500,000 cast ballots in the 2000 GOP presidential primary.

Do candidates need 15% of the vote to receive delegates in South Carolina? If so, and should Sharpton and Clark end up below 15%, would Edwards and Kerry split up all of the SC delegates proportionally?

If Sharpton gets shut out in the delegate count because he got only 10% of the vote, he should hold a rally declaring "NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE" and demand that he be given 10% of the delegates. The Democrats being the Quota Party, they may just do it.

Y'know, I've been thinking...regardless of the polls at this moment, Kerry is not going to beat Bush.

Which brings up the question: once his treason in Vietnam has caused Bush to open up a 15-point lead, will he be Torricellied? I've heard that there were some, even in the GOP, who discussed the possibility of a last-minute switch in 1996 from the obvious loser Dole to the (less obvious loser) Colin Powell, but the GOP wasn't low enough to pull such a thing.

The Democrats, of course, have proven that they're low enough to even go after Bush's daughters. So is Kerry going to be denied the nomination in spite of "winning" it numerically?
