I'm not sure it is fair to criticize Kerry on this issue. I'm sure he was just trying to protect some business interest of his wife. The Heinz empire has many agricultural needs and if Ortega was going to sell her sugar, for example, at well below the world rate, that would certainly justify the Senator's position. After all, it wouldn't have been like he was shilling for an oil company he used to work for, this would be for his own family fortune.

Kerry didn't marry into the Heinz empire until 1995, he was separated from his former spouse, Julia Thorne. They were separated in 1982 and divorced in 1988.
