Senate Coverage(2-2 to 2-6-04)

I find it odd when I hear people say they "Don't pay attention to politics".

Let me see if I understand this correctly.

They don't pay attention to the people that write the laws they have to live by?

Then of course yell and complain about all these new laws AFTER they are in effect.

That brings me to the point of this thread.

Here I'd like have an outlet to direct my yelling and complain DURING the process of the laws being made. Along with those wonderful and witty remarks made by our elected officials.

And also to give fellow Freepers links to various helpful Government web sites so they can research further and add to the thread.

Where to begin? (At the beginning, of course.)

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings. (I'd like stress this on little thing about C-SPAN that I love, NO COMMERCIAL INTERRUPTIONS.)

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Majority and Minority

(I'd like to rant for a second. Prior to Senator Frist's office running the calendar any bills and amendments talked about would be linked on the calendar the next day. Now all you get is when the Senate will meet and the bill # without a link. I'd like to see it change back.)

Roll Call Votes can be found here.

Kennedy: "If the senator from AZ doesn't like it, that's his problem."

I just turned it on, what was that about?

By the way, great day on the ocean yesterday. The fishing was a little slow after a quick two, but you couldn't beat the weather. It got up to 40 deg., almost no wind, bright sunshine and unlimited visibillity, we could see Manhattan from 30 miles SSE. The water was really like glass, either mirror smooth, or in by the dock in big flat hard sheets. ;-)

I didn't catch it. I was marking a spot to find it in the Record tomorrow.

I was eating dinner but watching, and Sen. Hutchinson gave a good rundown on some of the budget items too.

The fishing was great considering the cold water. Tautog are supposed to go into a hibernation mode at these temps.(40 deg. is the supposed temp. and it was 37 deg. surface). I'm guessing the water was a little warmer on bottom there in 120'. I only got three keepers, which was fine since it was so nice out. At first I thought it was going to be better since I got two nice ones in the first 20 minutes. As I put it on the fishing board, the water was like glass, smooth like a mirror 10 miles out into the ocean, and a hard, flat solid sheet in Sheepshead Bay. ;-)

I used to watch C-SPAN for programs such as the series on Presidents. However, C-SPAN has become C-SPAM and with the exception of a few good broadcasts, they are another segment of the election industry.

They have elected officials on (and supportive callers) who say things that are incorrect. I have written Brian Lamb and sent several instances where readily available data form the OMB data base would prove the guest's comments false! But NO RESPONSE or acknowledgment of receipt!

Mr. FRIST (for himself and Mr. DASCHLE) submitted the following resolution; which was considered and agreed to:

COMMEMORATING ``COLUMBIA'' CREW, HOSTING THE SUPER BOWL, AND SEEKING THE TRUTH REGARDING INTELLIGENCE-GATHERING -- (House of Representatives - February 03, 2004)

[Page: H256] GPO's PDF
---
(Ms. JACKSON-LEE of Texas asked and was given permission to address the House for 1 minute and to revise and extend her remarks.)

Ms. JACKSON-LEE of Texas. Mr. Speaker, I will look forward to joining my colleague, the gentleman from Texas (Mr. Burgess) on the floor of the House, to celebrate and commemorate the heroic lives of the seven Columbia astronauts, our friends and neighbors.

Today I would like to cite two disparately different perspectives on some issues that I think are important. First, let me take personal pride in congratulating all of the law enforcement, community leaders, civic leaders, our past mayor, and our present mayor Bill White, for what has been touted beyond other issues as the best played Super Bowl in the NFL's history, and to congratulate Houstonians for being the most welcoming city that I think the Super Bowl has experienced over the last years of its history.

We are proud of what we did. We are proud of the family-oriented entertainment that we offered, and we look forward to extending an invitation back to all of you in years to come. Might I congratulate Bob McNair and all of the civic leaders for what they have done.

Let me conclude, Mr. Speaker, by saying I will continue my representation of important issues as I discuss the need for congressional hearings on seeking the truth about the vulnerability or nonvulnerability of our intelligence-gathering.
