The lesser of two evils is gridlock. Face reality. A Republican expanding government faster than any President since Lyndon B. Johnson, one of the greatest socialist of all-time, does more harm to the conservative movement than anything I can think of. Conservativism is dead as a viable political movement if both parties are pushing socialist policies.
To: Consort
Or we can hope for gridlock in 2004 and a born-again Republican party that believes in limited government that brings us a Reagan-like Presidential candidate in 2008.
To: Dane
The expansion of Medicare, amnesty plans for illegals, campaign finance reform, the Teddy Kennedy education bill...all likely wouldn't have happened with Algore and Republican congress.
To: Ol' Sparky
Or we can hope for gridlock...Been there, done that. Don't let Dems control any part of government.

They will drift leftward as conservatives abandon them like they did in '92 and/or to fill the vacuum created as the Dems move further left towards Socialism. No, what happened in 1992 lead to Republicans running on conservative ideas in 1994 and winning 50 seats in the House and control of Congress.

We're hoping for gridlock, granny, and then for the Republicans to lick their wounds and present a conservative agenda and Presidential candidate in 2008.
To: Ol' Sparky
We are at war.

and Republican congress
You assume that a fragile majority in the Senate would be maintained if a Democrat is elected.... I don't make that assumption. I don't know what the voting populace would do if they decide to change CinC at this time..... My guess it they may well decide to change a few members of Congress also.
The Republicans have only had all three branches in their control for less than two years and you are ready to throw them out.... sheesh. You keep control and get some Congress critters elected to help move things back to right. The Congress provides the legislation...
And never mind the next 30 to 40 years of liberal judicial decisions should a Democrat get elected ....

Bush has done more to destroy the principles of limited government than any Republican in 30 years.Federal spending as a percentage of GDP is lower now than it was during any of Reagan's 8 budget years.
To: Ol' Sparky
Third party vote for President = Gridlock. That is preferable to a socialist Republican. The only time in recent history that the R congress stood up to a D president was in 1995. Clinton had his way in all other 7 years of his presidency.
Gridlock is the exception and not the rule.
To: Ol' Sparky
...what happened in 1992 lead to Republicans running on conservative ideas in 1994 and winning 50 seats in the House and control of Congress. The R congress was successfully demonized in 95. By the end of 95, their approval rating was lower than dirt.

So what if there is opposition? Is that so much worse than both parties marching us toward socialism, bothering only to spat about the pace of the march?
Conservative positions cannot win if they are not even advanced or defended. Now that the GOP is not, in the main, advancing or defending conservative positions it is no longer in the interests of conservatives to support them.
In ten year or less, the Constitution Party will be a major party. Hopefully Bush can destroy the Dems with the leftward tilt of the GOP, but if he fails he will destroy the Republican party.

I'm watching football tonight with my brother. Back on 9/11/2001, the building he used to work in -- WTC II -- was destroyed by terrorists.
My brother and I don't think that the dangers are exaggerated and we thank the wife you are with and her serviceman husband for all that they sacrifice to reduce the dangers.
I pray that her husband is OK.

That will do it. It's tempting but the thought of a Prez Kerry is too frightening to do it.
To: Ol' Sparky
Where's the guarantee that would happen? If you're so certain a President Kerry now will bring about Utopia in four years, I guess it's a good idea to vote for Kerry.
I don't like any of this any better than anyone else. I just think we're still better off with Bush and all his flaws to Pres. Kerry.
Do you remember Howard Philips and Buchanan both running against Bush? They considered him more dangerous to the country than Gore. I interpreted their commercials to mean they're just in it for the publicity. I used to contribute to CP. I feel like a dope for doing it. I now have no use for either Philips or Buchanan.
