The true story:

Cleland was hopping into a chopper when he noticed that one of his grenades had fallen onto the ground. Instead of kicking it away, he reached down to pick it up, and it blew his arm off and one of his legs, damaging the other leg so badly that it had to be removed later.

OK, thanks for the clarification. You know how these internet rumors travel (although one of my sources works for the V.A.)

Um, how does a pin come out of a grenade? No personal experience, but I thought it took 4lbs of force to remove the pin.

thanks Dog, I thought I was the only one that knew that and why, when they call Cleland a hero who lost 3 limbs in Viet Nam, doesn't anyone mention he was playing Curly (stooges) and blew his own limbs off. When it is not mentioned everyone assumes it was in heavy combat or something.

I thank Max for fighting in Viet Nam but quit using the missing limbs for a sympathy vote.
