The GDP share of manufacturing is unchanged from 20 years ago. Job losses have been due to innovation and productivity gains. TradeAlert is blowing hot air to get more handouts from Congress, period.

NAM (a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fortune 100) cooks these figures by not including the value of foreign made parts, just the final article. Thus a SUV assembled in Janesville Wisconsin is 100% American whether or not it contains 25% Chinese parts.

Your numbers, supplied by NAM (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Transnational 250) are flat-out wrong.

According to Bureau of Economic Analysis, the mfg. share of GDP was 18.7% in 1987, and 14.1% in 2001. The manufacturing sector showed a DECREASE of 6.6% in income dollars from 2000/2001, the first decrease since 1947, by the way.
