Cell phones dont work on airplanes: An experiment was conducted to see if cell phones can work in airplanes. The experiment found that the percent of success rate of contact was:
89% at 2,000 feet,
44% at 4,000 feet,
30% at 6,000 feet,
9% at 8,000 feet,
Flight 93 was flying at 35,000 feet.
A connection would have been impossible.

That's a post on a discussion forum, that offers no insight at all as to why the people I see talking on cell phones while in flight are all faking it.

Than why did i hear about folks making cell phone calls on Todd Beamer's flight and the one that flew into the Pentagon?

You should probably point out that the only source of information on that cell-phone "experiment" is some tinfoiler named Anonimeme.

A connection would have been impossible. Probability of a connection - 89% at 2,000 feet
- 44% at 4,000 feet
- 30% at 6,000 feet
- 9% at 8,000 feet
Flight 93 was flying at 35,000 feet. The plane was at an altitude well below 2000 feet when the Islamikazis began their run on the WTC.
