The great need of our times is real jobs and not wars. Free Trade and Globalism now have a history of failures over the past ten years. The greatest lie during the Clinton years in the land of "is" was not about Monica but it was about the economy as millions drifted into a silent depression. The U.S. continued the most masssive dislocation of jobs in our history. It was President Cllinton, a Democrat and a Democrat controlled Congress that passed both NAFTA and GATT. They locked hands with Senator Dole and Representive Gingrich with Conservatives like Rush Limbaugh backing the passage of both NAFTA and GATT betraying the American Workers. These unfair trade agreements acted as a Pearl Harbor attack on workers. (See cartoon at http://arklineart.fotopages.com ) When President Bush took office he supported the passage of Fast Track that in effect made the Executive Branch the CEO of world trade relating to the U.S. and other countries abroad. Free enterprize was betrayed this way too. In the end with Free Trade, we have governments acting as power brokers, elite groupings, giant trans-national corporations (with some saying we must give up our concepts of sovereignty) and international organizations like the WTO who control the flow of trade, work and money outside any real democratic process. The WTO ignores the voice of the workers and acts without their consent. They ignore that workers are the very core essential to any economy. At the same time, here in the USA, we have empty factories, closed down main streets and third world situations in out inner cities while the consumers who forget that they are also the workers are shopping their way out of their jobs at places like Wal-Mart. One CEO of a company still in the USA, says even if his company paid their workers absolutely nothing they can not compete with the cheap imports sold at Wal-Mart.

It becomes an oxymoron to have have Research and Development in this country when the production phase goes to another country. The taxpayers fund much of our R&D and in the end they pay taxes to lose their jobs.

We can think Global and think Trade but we also must think Local. We must restore our value added local economies from raw product up through the finished product through distribution and then the retail level. Any extra money that is put into the economy now goes first to retail and then fans out to faraway places where the products are made. The money does not stay here. It grows economies in places like China and India while our degrades and workers wages here are deflated. It is a race to the bottom and in the end a working poor class can not even afford to buy the cheaper imports while the destitute workers abroad can not affford to buy the very things they make for us let alone have any money left over to buy anything the U.S. may have left to sell.
