I suspect the other poster's point is that the present-day political parties predicate their actions on retention of power as opposed to any real principles. I'm sure they rationalize their decision by believing if they remain in power - even at the cost of dearly held principles - the country will still be better off than if the other party won power.
To some extent that's true, but slowly adopting the other party's principles still takes the nation in the wrong direction.

I suppose I can see why you might think that. But I believe that politicians usually have America's best interests at heart, even if they go about doing things the wrong way. I certainly don't agree with every politician and I don't even agree with President Bush on everything but I do think that even the most misguided politicians believe they're doing what's best for the country.
