CITIZEN STAFF REPORT
KEY WEST -- Police officers investigate all kinds of thefts, usually involving money, bicycles, jewelry or cars.
In Key West, stolen goods can also include marijuana, as a New York man complained to a Key West police officer Monday about his missing pot.
It all began when the manager of a local hotel called police to report that a guest was claiming his "weed" was stolen, along with a watch. The manager said the guest was standing outside the lobby, hammering on the glass door and swaying back and forth, the report said.
Officer Todd Stevens arrived on the scene to check out the situation. Stevens said the guest told him his watch and "weed" were missing from his room.
But Stevens said he had trouble investigating because the guest smelled of alcohol, had trouble standing up, and often shouted over his voice and interrupted him when he was asking questions. The guest was, however, able to articulate that the marijuana was bought in the Bahamas, was of a very high quality, and had been stored in a drawer on the bedside table.
He also said a "Do Not Clean" sign he put on the doorknob when he left to go fishing was not there anymore.
He also said a watch, worth $1,800, was left in the room. After further questioning, he said the watch, worth $30,000, was in a vault. Later, he said the watch, worth $3,000, was on the bedside table. He added that he has a Rolex watch worth $20,000 that he does not care about in the room's vault and it was still there.
He said he tried to report the theft to management, but they laughed at him, so he requested the police be called.
Stevens said as he took inventory of the stolen items, the man did not want to give the amount of marijuana, or its worth, reportedly saying, "I only want to report the watch, not the money or the weed, because I don't want to tell you how much weed there was."
