[history]
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has asked the Bush administration to waive a gasoline additive requirement that California officials believes will cause a huge and wasteful increase in prices at the pump while impeding the state's air pollution efforts.
Under current federal law aimed at curbing smog, the state must add an ``oxygenate'' to gasoline. But in 1999, California banned the oxygenate methyl tertiary-butyl ether, or MTBE, because it was polluting drinking ground water across the state.

If President Bush disagrees, I say they decide the matter in an arm wrestling contest. What say you? ;-)

What evidence is there that oxygenates have any useful effect in reducing pollution from cars with modern emissions control equipment? I know that oxygenates can do wonders at reducing pollution from carbuerated engines without catalytic convertors, and there might be some sense in requiring people who still use such cars to use oxygenated fuels. But what's the point of requiring everyone to use them?

I know some folks have to work for a living so I leave a few morsels from time to time. LOL ;-]
Besides it was near my nappy time when I saw it, so I opted to just tag it to that thread ambrose had posted yesterday.
Ona local note, it looks like Ron Gonzales will be out for a bit, he popped a vessel or so it sounds. It could be all the excitement at city hall of late, lots of stuff has been bubbling in the san Jose city arena lately with calls for lobbyist reform and influence buying concerns at city hall being raised by the Merc and all.

To the contrary all of the science tells us that these oxygenates ( rallied for by Boxer and others) in fact do more harm than good. And even as our ground water is poisoned and our air made more toxic by the oxygebate residue they refuse to acknowledge that with modern cars and better modern fuels that the pollution problem doesn't exist. I hope Arnold pulls this one off I will yippy skippy for a whole week. But I believe it was tried and the EPA said nope the law has to be changed before we can let you off the hook

Oh, oxygenated fuels are not only useless, more energy is required to manufacture a gallon of ethanol than is gained from burning a gallon of ethanol.
This has long been one of the most mindless exercises our government has engaged in.

Exactly. That MTBE is destroying our water supply and...when it comes to cleaning up the air, it doesn't (since MTBE lowers fuel efficiency, it actually FORCES cars to BURN MORE fuel then cut it).
Now, the "good" news about ethanol, which is supposed to replace MTBE, it doesn't pollute the ground water. HOWEVER, it is still, useless and probably reduces fuel efficiency, causing more pollution instead of reducing it.
I too hope Arnold succeeds. But. given the power of the EPA and the Federal Government (not to mention, all the corn growers that are pushing ethanol)...I am not holding my breath on this one.
