TULALIP RESERVATION The Tulalip Tribes announced today they are laying off 240 employees of the Tulalip Casino, the latest sign that the huge, glitzy casino is not doing as well as tribal leaders expected.
The layoffs will bring the total casino workforce to just over 1,400.
Before the casino opened in June, tribal leaders hailed it as a "cash cow" and projected it would bring in $161 million in revenue by the end of 2003. Revenues and visitor-levels have stayed close to projections, but expenses have been high, tribal leaders said.

Gee, what a tragedy.
People blow an unbelievable amount of money at casinos, race track, lottery tickets. Just amazing.

I understand the Mafia is interested in learning about the innovate techniques the Tulalips use to skim cash from the casino.

What a shock. Having seen it with my own eyes, it was evident from the start that the place was overbuilt for the location. Furthermore, there are other tribes in WA who appear to be much better at these ventures than the Tulalip.

I have seen it off the 5. It is huge, a Disneyland for adults. Up north they don't quite have the population center like the Mukleshoots do in Auburn. Then to add to the competition the Puallup Tribe is building the largest Casino in the West Coast in a few years... Those guys will get all the bucks $$$$$

I have gone to the Muckleshoot casino on occasion to watch the live music. My wife and I ate dinner there once but that was the only money they pried away from me.
I get a sordid satisfaction out of watching middle class people lose money at the rate of about $200 an hour at the Roulette wheel.

Did you catch this one ?
Front page of St.Louis Post-dispatch today .
Ford will cut 1,000 jobs in Hazelwood ( MO ): Layoffs are blamed on declining sales of Explorer SUV.
The whole afternoon shift is being laid off.

I believe the operative word here is "anecdotal."
Much like the CBS report tonight that showed some people at Domino Sugar losing their jobs.
At the close of the report, the reporter asked the rhetorical question, "so is the economy really on the rebound?"
To which the laid-off worker replied, "not for me it isn't."
We can expect lots more of this kind of stuff.

The whole afternoon shift is being laid off.Yeah, I saw that but decided against posting it.
No doubt it'll have a significant local impact,
but it's not necessarily a permanent layoff.
Ford has an agreement to keep that facility open until 2007.
I try to stick with more permanent closures and cutbacks.
Now this article about the casino doesn't exactly match that same criteria,
but considering that casino gambling is so highly ballyhooed by politicians for bringing prosperity to communities, AND the other political issues associated with Native American tribal casinos, I figured this story had other merits that made it worthy of posting.
It's not an entirely consistant approach,
but with so many such different articles to pick from, I try to stick with those that add some kind of different "twist" to the discussion.

I believe the operative word here is "anecdotal."Yeah. All these stories about businesses cutting back, laying-off and/or closing are just "anecdotal". They didn't REALLY happen. The media is just making it up.</sarcasm>

You can find anything if you look hard enough.
I know a couple in Chicago that became millionaires virtually overnight.
Gotta love that Bush Economy!

Gambling in moderation is fun and a great way to alleviate stress. If you budget an X amount of dollars beforehand and LEAVE when it's gone...I don't see anything wrong with that.

Here I am in my fifties...we haven't done jack in space for the last 30 years, and I'll be on the threshold of retirement before we merely go BACK TO THE FRIGGIN' MOON!
It's enough to make a grown, aging man ask, "Wha happen?!?"
