Hey, Eugene Volokh may really be on to something here: why not play the "race card" against arguments and contentions you don't like? It takes less time and effort to rebut your opponents' arguments; you can make the opponents' "attitudes" the issue rather than the facts; and half the time, you've intimidated your opponents into shutting up within seconds of playing the race card! It's worked sensationally well for Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, OJ Simpson, and too many others to mention. It'll work just fine for Kobe Bryant and Michael Jackson, too.

Why can't good "grassroots conservative" Republicans jump on this ideological gravy train as well? I mean, don't we need the votes among blacks and Hispanics?

Haven't you heard? The latest technique that today's modern conservatives have adopted from the Left is that of charging racism whenever it suits them. They are conservatives of the LBJ-Hubert Humphrey persuasion, who would never countenance the racist insensitivity of someone who wasn't Politically Correct regarding Civil Rights- you know, like Barry Goldwater, who didn't think the Constitution granted the Federal government the power to tell individual citizens what to think on the matter.

But what could Barry Goldwater have known about a conservative view of the Constitution, compared with the sensitive PC 'conservative' of the 21st century? After all, enforcing correct thought is so much more important than freedom, especially if that means the freedom to hold ideas we don't approve of. So quit griping and get with the program.
