I almost asked that before posting the MC-washed theory.

And I always leave the cash tendered laying on the top op the register in plain sight so that there is no question about the amount tendered. I had more than one person try the "I gave You a $50 or A $100 not a $20".

I just pointed at the top of the register and said "no You didn't"

I put it crossways on the shelf above the cash drawer.

That way they can't snatch it back and run.

Same idea though. Never put the tendered bill in the till until you've made the change. :-D
