SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger reached across party lines Thursday to name seven new members of the state Board of Education - including Jeannine Martineau, the immediate past president of the California School Boards Association, and Reed Hastings, the board's 2003 president and a longtime supporter of former Gov. Gray Davis.
"For children to learn, one of the components they need are dedicated public servants to find creative ways to ensure our children are prepared for their futures," said Schwarzenegger in a statement. "I am confident these members will work tirelessly to guarantee our children have every opportunity to be successful."
Of the seven seats he filled, four went to Democrats - including Hastings who gave $210,000 to Davis' fight against recall. Other Democrats appointed were Ruth Bloom, a Southern California businesswoman and advocate for the arts; Ruth Green, a member of the Board of Trustees for the Santa Barbara elementary and high school districts; and Bonnie Reiss, a Schwarzenegger's longtime friend and current senior adviser.
Martineau, who also served as a member of Schwarzenegger's transition team, is a former teacher and author. Schwarzenegger also appointed Glee Johnson, a Republican and member of former Gov. Pete Wilson's staff, and Johnathan Williams, the founder and co-director of the Accelerated School, a charter school in South Central Los Angeles. Williams has no party affiliation.
The 11 members of the Board of Education are appointed by the governor and do not receive salaries. The board crafts education regulations, approves textbooks and oversees testing and accountability programs.

I am glad I don't have kids,, but I do have nieces and nephews. The demRats outnumber republican appointees 2 to 1. Yeah, we got a real moderate group here.

At least with Gray Davis, we could've had a Republican in '06... But, NOOOOOOO!!! We had to get this pro-baby-butcheting, (newly) anti-English, pro-invasion, gun-grabbing, bond-blowing sex fiend who slanders the name of Republicans and conservatives by calling himself one.
You know, they kept saying "A vote for McClintock is a vote for Gray Davis." I hope they all feel sooooo much better now.

Where are South40, Tamsey and the rest when we need them?
Probably practicing their duck and cover maneuvers.

I think I ran into one of their associates early this morning. They'll be back.

No, you read that wrong. Bustamente lost. Believe it or not, that's your little Frankenkennedy who just appointed MECha to the education board.
Goddammit, I actually find myself wishing Davis won. At least that way we'd be rid of him in another two years. Now we're stuck with his mutant-ape clone for another six.
"A vote for McClintock = A vote for Bustamenta" makes as much sense as "A vote for Schwartzenegger = a vote for Gary Coleman."
*Squawk* Arnold's cool! *squawk* He's a Republican! *Squawk! Tu-tu!*

I'll be seeing Arnold tonight at a reception for Dana Rohrabacher. I'll let him know you're upset.

Am I happy about all of Arnold's moves? No. But I still believe I made the right vote.
I am not happy with all of the things that Bush is doing either, but I'll vote for him come November.
I'm also not happy that Surfin' Dana has been rumored to have been accepting money from donors with ties to terrorist sympathizers. I'll be keeping a wary eye open for "swarthy" types tonight.
