He was an Alabama State judge. He had no authority to place decorations in any Federal Courthouse.

My bad. It's late here.

Would you have supported his right to do so in "his" courthouse (keeping in mind that it belongs to the people, but was where he worked)?

No. A statue of Buddha has no place in a courthouse. A plaque with the eight noble truths however ... that would be equivalent. But innappropriate as it has no historical basis in our laws. So no to that too.
