Karadzic's bodyguard captured by NATO
CNN | 28 January 2004

Posted on 01/28/2004 6:29:25 PM PST by mark502inf

(CNN) --NATO-led peacekeepers captured the former bodyguard to Radovan Karadzic, the ex-Bosnian Serb leader wanted by a U.N. war crimes tribunal for a 1995 massacre of 8,000 men and boys.

Wednesday's capture marks the second time in recent weeks that a person close to Karadzic has been captured.

Zeljko Jankovic, known as Luna, was snatched off the street in a dramatic morning raid as he walked his daughter to school in the city of Bijeljina, according to local media reports.

The reports said three masked members of NATO's Stabilization Force jumped from a van, grabbed Jankovic and whisked him away. The NATO force confirmed the capture, but wouldn't elaborate.

"The operation occurred without incident and was conducted in a quiet and professional manner," a NATO statement said.

Lt. Col. Julian Bower, an spokesman for the stabilization force, told CNN that Jankovic was being held in an undisclosed location for questioning.

"That essentially lasts as long as it takes," Bower said.

The statement said its forces searched Jankovic's home to gather "material that may assist in further identifying" people indicted of war crimes.

Once the NATO force has completed its questioning of Jankovic, he is likely to be turned over to Bosnian authorities, Bower said.

NATO said the capture was the result of information gained about three weeks ago in the town of Pale, when another person close to Karadzic was taken into custody.

Pale, in the mountains above Sarajevo, was a Serb stronghold during the bloody Bosnian war in the early 1990s.

Bower said the force, working in cooperation with the interior ministry and local police, is "building up a bit of momentum" in its hunt for Karadzic and other at-large war crime suspects.

"The circle has tightened," he said.

In 1995, a peace accord signed in Dayton, Ohio, ended the war between Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Serbs. The conflict was Europe's most deadly since World War II. More than 200,000 people died.

According to the War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, 20 indicted suspects are still at large, including former Bosnian Serb President Karadzic, who has a $5 million reward posted on him, and his top general, Ratko Mladic.

The U.N. tribunal indicted the two men for the massacre of up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the eastern town of Srebrenica in 1995 and the siege of Sarajevo, in which more than 10,000 people died.

The move by NATO is part of its stepped-up campaign to bring the wartime Bosnian Serb leader and genocide suspect to trial. (Karadzic profile)

Jankovic is suspected of being involved in a network of people aiding indicted war crimes suspects.

The alliance is targeting people who have enabled one of the world's most wanted men to remain a fugitive eight years after the war ended. The international community has frozen bank accounts and imposed visa restrictions on Karadzic and his support network.

Karadzic remains popular among nationalist Serbs, especially in the east Bosnian region, which is still politically controlled by hardliners.

Human rights activists have criticized NATO for failing to capture Karadzic and Mladic.

In August 2003, NATO forces took up positions outside the home of Karadzic's daughter in the Bosnian Serb wartime stronghold of Pale.

The NATO force failed to find Mladic during a raid on his mother's house after she died in August 2003.

NATO force authorities believe Karadzic is hiding somewhere in the Republic of Srpska, the Bosnian Serb territory within Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The Bush Administration and NATO are getting ready to pull the plug on SFOR. They're putting on a full court press to get Mladic and Karadzic first.

This is getting really ridiculous. Why don't SFOR just pack up and go home? Karadzic/Mladic never harmed any American or American interests or any other Nato country, so where is the logic in wasting so much resources to capture them, when there are terrorists who actually killed American citizens still loose? Let the Serbs try their own war criminals.

Let the Serbs try their own war criminals.

It would have been nice, once upon a time.

But as far as the big fish are concerned, it's just too late - yon Serbs have proven more interested in electing war criminals to government than prosecuting them.

You realize that by accusing Clark of war crimes you are also indicting everybody from the pilots who carried out your supposed 'war crimes' on up through the chain of command to Clark?

Of course not, you've just got more important items on your agenda than America or her servicemen.

Just out of curiosity, did your ancestors come over on the same boat that Crazykatz's did? Cause she was making exactly the same claims you were about how your family had been here for so long and you are not a Serb, etc.

As a matter of fact, you two were pretty much seperated at birth, from what I can see of your posts, well, except for the fact that Crazykatz never claimed to have served in Korea, and while she lied about everything she could imagine, she never lied about having served in order to build up some false impression of having actually done something for America once upon a time.

Have not got a clue about what the HECK you are writing about. You keep on accusing me of things.... I am just a tad over 70 and a male. HARDLY A GIRL!!

Come on down to South Florida and I will kick your assets into tommorrow if you keep on calling me a girl! GOT THAT TWERP!

I never saw a Yugoslav person in my life as far as I know. May I ought to look some of them up... if YOU don't like .em they must be OK!!

I know clinton was a beast so I take sides with his enemies, WHOEVER they are.

WHO gives you the right to accuse ANYBODY of anything. Whoever that poster was, she ought to come here and cuss your ass out! You need a a good cussing out. The FR moderator ought to kick you for accusing folks of lying.

Anyway, if the soldiers who killed on the command of clark and clinton KNEW it was a lie/sham war from the start.... then, they would be criminals. They did not know it was all based on the worst possible lies. clinton lied, he always lied.

OF COURSE CLINTON LIED AS USUAL TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND THE MILITARY... and to "war" they went.

By the way, I bet you never served in the military service of the USA for one day. You act like a poser who voted for demo-rats including commie clinton. You probably believed clinton didn't have sex with the trollop.

You will vote for your hero clark if you get a chance the way you defend him.

It is hard for you to stomach isn't it.... more than one American feels like I do about your albanian buddies and clark and clinton. That is the real reason you keep accusing folks of being the same person. You act like you are paranoid.

From now on, if you don't like somebody on this site then they are OK with me. Crazycats or Maddogs, whomever.

Well, I was in Korea for a year and a half from '89 through '91 up at Pan Mun Jom with the UNCJSA-JSF, and with exceptions for time off and a one month visit to Camp Jackson, for PLDC, I spent my whole tour north of the Imjin.

So, where were you in Korea and what were you doing?

Serbs have a right to elect whoever they please. That's called "democracy". If you don't agree then you are a communist. By the way did you know Serbia has already set up a court for trying Serbs accused of war crimes? When will your friends the shiptars try their war criminals? They don't even admit that a single war crime was ever committed by the uck. Same with the Bosnians and Croats.

You know, here's the strange thing: you say you're not Crazykatz, yet you both know a 33 year old Gulf War Vet who got out of the Army, worked in the IT field, and then re-entered the Army as a Medic after having his job offshored to India.

What are the chances of that?

Perhaps you should ask your nephew what he thinks of people who lie about having fought in a war when they didn't - not because you're doing anything of the sort, of course, but just so you two can compare notes about your feelings on those who engage in stealing valor.

I asked you where you served in Korea - it's a simple question, and we have Freepers who served alongside you there, who would be more than happy to reminisce about old times, in addition to the folks who would just like to hear the experiences of someone who's seen combat in one of our Nation's wars.

So how's about it?

You are sure a nut case there skippy. Accuse folks of all sorts of stuff, mostly lying. Who made you the judge of all freepers?

In fact, I do know several persons who are in the service now. A couple nephews, two nieces and maybe 4 other of the cousin's kids. One may be out by now.

Why, I even know some guys and gals at the senior's center who have grandkids over in Iraq or Kosovo. Every single one of these kids are between 24 and 35 years of age.

Of my relatives, TWO were computer programmers in civilian life and lost jobs to foreigners. One is stationed at Fort______ right now. The other one is stationed in ________. They are both in their early thirties.

There are two nurses, a pilot, a grunt and I cannot remember what other jobs the others may be doing. God bless 'em all!!

But anyway, two did lose their IT jobs to foreigners and those TWO are now in a medical field. I know one niece was an engineer and lost her job too.

So, it seems the problem of people losing their IT or engineering jobs and joining the service MAY NOT BE REAL RARE. In fact, bub, I heard your boy clark is planning to make a campaign issue of it because it is so WIDESPREAD.

I really do not owe you explanation of anything. You will just have to find your crazycats and mad dogs someplace else.

Maybe they are dead, very ill, got tired of FR or they are living abroad?

And, maybe you yourself are crazycat yourself. You need enemies to spar with so maybe you just make them up.

As far as Korea goes, it was no picnic, so dont bug me or I will find your lousey butt and kick it into tommorrow.

I do know some vets here on FR and WE do freep mail. THAT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS, skippy.

Hoplite..... And, then of course, there are all my late wife's nephews and nieces. Some of them have served the country too.

Let's see .... do you need ALL their histories as well?

Would take all night because she had 4 brothers and 3 sisters. They ALL have a bunch of kids too.

Of course, I did NOT even mention all of mine and the wife's kids.

Now, I do not recall if any of my own nephews, served IN Gulf War 1. One was in Europe... Italy or maybe it was Germany in 1991. I think my one of my late wife's brother's oldest 2 were there.

Funny thing about coincidences. Skippy- wesley clark's son was in the military... maybe you met him when you were in Korea?

COINCIDENCE... In December a young relative of mine from Maine went to Universal studios in Orlando. He turned around and near him was his Uncle from California. He had not seen or talked with him in a long, long time. He had lost all contact with that branch of the family due to a divorce. DO YOU NEED TO KNOW THE DETAILS ON THAT?

Maybe your hated FR poster has a relative like that too?

SMALL WORLD BUB and coincidence happens.

Deal with it, skippy-jr.

Since you hate SERBIANS PEOPLE SO MUCH... I HAVE DECIDED TO TRY TO FIND SOME. If you don't like somebody they must be OK.

Oh, and by the way my daughter and her husband send their regards. They aren't Serbians either. He is from COSTA RICA. None of my sons are married to Serbians either... sorry to disappoint you.

Destro: know where I can find some Serbians in South Florida or Western North Carolina or Maine? MUST locate some and buy drinks all around!

Oh, by the way... did I fail to mention that neither nephew who lost is IT job to foreigners is 33 nor is my former engineer niece. Ahemm.

When I think you NEED to know my service history ... I'll tell you. Since you are so dam-ed rude, I will tell you nothing except that I was in the war and I served. I DID my part. THE REST IS NONE OF YOUR DAM-ED BUSINESS.

Put your real name on FR, skippy-jr and maybe I will even tell you how much these old bones weigh.

And cut the crap with the foreign lingo... makes you even more rude than before. If such is possible.

We had such a nice wedding recently for my daughter and I sure like her new husband. He speaks English, French and Spanish. Maybe I get can get him to write something in all those langauges for you. Oh, don't forget he is from COSTA RICA, that is NOT Yugoslava.

I swear. Are all these albanian/clark supporters such rude ducks?

I have got to find me some Serbians. My son-in-law says I should put an ad in the newspaper for some! LOL. He is just kidding. I know there are some Orthodox Churches around here. I am new to this part of Florida so I will just get out the telephone book. Maybe I can find some of them at a Church.

Can't you just imagine this old man out in front of the place waiting still service is over. Hey, buddy, you a Serbian? Come with me I want to buy you dinner and a round. LOL.

If they are bad as skippy thinks, why.... they might even puch me in the nose. lol.

Hey destro. What about us go looking for Serbians. Are you in Florida by any chance?

THE REST IS NONE OF YOUR DAM-ED BUSINESS

When someone uses purported military service to provide themselves with a measure of credibility that has been lost beyond recall in their alternate user account, it damn well is.

You should have paid more attention to the fate of "Deep in the Huertgen Forest".

I asked you where you served in Korea - cut the BS and answer the question.

PS, as an alternate exercise for you, perhaps you could explain how you managed to serve in Korea without picking up even the most rudimentary knowledge of hangul?

Pay attention now skippy.

I have no intention of telling you anything else. And, you know what? You can't force me to. Nor will you you goad me into anything else.

It must be frustrating for you NOT to be able to get all you want from somebody.

clark is like that. YOU are like that.

Go lurk around some other threads and see if you can intimidate somebody else.

You don't scare this OLD bird dog. My memory isn't so great sometimes and I have been ill for alittle while. BUT I DON'T SCARE EASY.
